A north-to-south drive around Awaji Island based on a Gemini-crafted plan
Gemini's Awaji Island Plan
This itinerary is based on a plan created by Gemini. See how the actual route differed.
Awaji SA (Southbound) โ Fueling Up Before the Island
The first stop after crossing the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge is Awaji SA (southbound). The food court lines up local gourmet dishes made with Awaji Island ingredients, letting you taste the island's atmosphere right from the start of your trip. Fried skewers in hand, the Awaji Island drive officially begins.
๐ข First bite of Awaji flavor โ right off the bridge
Michi-no-Eki Awaji โ Directly Under the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge
The Akashi Kaikyo Bridge stretches 3,911 meters, connecting Honshu to Awaji Island as one of the world's longest suspension bridges. Michi-no-Eki Awaji stands at the southern end with the bridge's main towers looming directly overhead. Standing beneath the cables reaching skyward, lungs full of salty sea breeze โ a powerful start to the island adventure.

Hyogo Prefectural Park Awaji Hana-Sajiki โ Hillside Rapeseed & Osaka Bay
A roughly 10-hectare flower garden spread across rolling hills at 298 meters above sea level. In mid-March, rapeseed flowers lay a brilliant yellow carpet across the slopes, with the blue expanse of Osaka Bay stretching to the horizon beyond. Walking the gentle hillside as flower fragrance and sea breeze intertwine โ this is Awaji's premier color spectacle. From winter's rapeseed to summer's sunflowers and marigolds, the scenery changes with every season. Free admission for this quality makes it an unmissable stop on a spring Awaji drive.

Nojima Scuola โ The Face of Awaji Island's Marchรฉ
Named after the Italian word for "school," this multi-facility complex is instantly recognizable by its red tent exterior. The marchรฉ inside overflows with Awaji-grown vegetables, local ingredients, and sweets. Gelato, onion dressing, seasonal produce straight from local farmers โ genuine Awaji souvenirs you won't find elsewhere abound. A quick circuit before heading to nearby Awaji Chef Garden is highly recommended.

Awaji Chef Garden โ Spice Curry on an Ocean-View Terrace & a Happy Surprise
A restaurant area with a sweeping ocean-view terrace overlooking Osaka Bay. Orange chairs and palm trees create a resort-like atmosphere as we dig into "Japanese Spice Curry" featuring Awaji beef and a whole charcoal-grilled Awaji onion. The sweetness of the onion โ rendered meltingly tender by the heat โ is extraordinary. Then came the happy surprise: the pop-up stall for "Gyuto Kome" (the beef bowl shop we'd planned for dinner) was right here. We seized the moment and had our longed-for beef bowl on the spot, changing dinner plans to a light evening stroll in Fukura instead.

Kitasaka Poultry Farm Direct Shop โ Pudding Served Inside the Shell
A small direct shop converted from red shipping containers. The star here is the "Tamago Marugoto Purin" (whole-egg pudding) โ a one-of-a-kind treat where the shell is cracked open with a special cutter and you eat pudding straight from it. The smooth custard that emerges carries the full, rich flavor of the egg itself. A farm-fresh warmth born of eggs laid by free-range hens raised on Awaji Island.
๐ฅ "Whole Egg Pudding" served in the shell โ the signature treat
Sanchoku Awaji Island Akai Yane โ All the Island's Bounty Under One Roof
True to its name, the vivid red roof catches the eye. This large direct-sales shop is packed with Awaji-grown vegetables, fruit, seafood, local processed foods, sweets, and souvenirs โ just browsing is a delight. A reliable one-stop for Awaji Island specialties including the famous onions. A casual mid-drive browse somehow ended with considerably heavier bags.

Takosenbei no Sato โ The Home of Awaji's Iconic Rice Crackers
Awaji Island and "takosenbei" (octopus rice crackers) go hand in hand. The factory-adjacent shop stocks dozens of flavors โ octopus, shrimp, onion, and more โ with free samples to guide your picks. Exclusive local sizes and limited flavors ensure your hand keeps reaching out. Affordable bulk pricing makes it the go-to for gifts to family and colleagues alike โ the undisputed hall-of-fame souvenir shop of Awaji.

Sano Elementary Terrace โ Catching Your Breath in a Renovated Schoolhouse
A former elementary school โ its stone monument still reading "Awaji School, Sano Elementary" โ reborn as a stylish cafe and shop. The exterior has been kept almost entirely as it was, while the interior has been refreshed in a clean, modern style. Afternoon light streaming through the windows, iced latte in hand, a quiet rest. Local artisan goods and fresh-picked produce fill the shelves โ a place where nostalgia and novelty intersect.
โ Renovated schoolhouse cafe ยท A relaxed rest stop to linger in๐ Fairfield Fukura by Marriott
A modern Marriott-affiliated hotel in Fukura, at the southernmost tip of Awaji Island. After check-in, a leisurely stroll around nearby Fukura Port. Since we'd already savored our longed-for beef bowl at Chef Garden earlier in the day, the evening was simply a light bite โ Awaji beef croquettes from Yoshida Butcher.

Fukura Port Stroll ยท Yoshida Butcher โ Closing Day 1 at the Local Meat Shop
An evening stroll through Fukura, the quiet harbor town facing the Naruto Strait. This hub of southern Awaji โ also the departure point for whirlpool sightseeing boats โ is best explored at a leisurely pace without luggage. The "Oniku Yoshida" sign caught our eye and we stepped right in. Freshly fried Awaji beef croquettes: simple, but the quality of the meat speaks for itself. A beloved neighborhood butcher, the perfect way to close out Day 1.

Michi-no-Eki Uzushio โ A Roadside Station with an Overwhelming View of the Naruto Strait
Near the southernmost tip of Awaji Island, this roadside station commands an extraordinary view of the Onaruto Bridge and the Naruto Strait right in front. Morning sunlight illuminates the white suspension bridge as the tidal currents of the strait move with visible energy. A landscape worthy of opening Day 2. The meat onigiri from "Uzushio Gyutto" โ charcoal-grilled meat packed tightly into Awaji rice โ makes for a luxurious breakfast enjoyed on the sea breeze.

Uzunoka Onaruto Bridge Memorial Hall โ A Hill Dedicated to Onions
A giant onion sculpture inscribed "#Ottamanegi" presides over the hilltop, with the Onaruto Bridge and sea spreading out behind it โ one of Awaji Island's most iconic photo spots. On the memorial hall terrace, tables and chairs shaped like cross-sectioned onions line the space, and inside, a unique server dispenses onion soup. Come here and you understand viscerally just how proud Awaji Island is of its onions.

Read "Minakoi Koiya," this market is the largest produce hub in the southern part of Awaji Island. Morning-picked vegetables brought directly from local farmers are available, with fresh Awaji onions and other island produce at remarkably low prices. This busy gathering spot for locals is the go-to place for bulk buying. Customers walking out with whole cardboard boxes full of produce are a common sight โ all our food souvenirs were sorted here in one go.

Awaji Farm โ Soft Serve from the "Island of Flowers and Milk"
Marked by a sign reading "Hana to Milk no Shima Awajishima Nyu" (Awaji Island Dairy โ Island of Flowers and Milk), this farm's soft-serve uses milk from cows raised right here on the island. Rich yet refreshingly clean on the finish, each bite savored in the peaceful farm air is something special. A sweet little reward after a satisfying shopping run at Minakoi Koiya.

Authentic Handmade Udon Moheiji โ Shichi Cafe Was Full, and We Hit the Jackpot
The original plan was lunch at "Shichi Cafe," set in a former onion warehouse โ but it was too popular, fully booked. A quick search nearby led us straight into "Honkaku Teuchi Udon Moheiji." We ended up ordering both the "Stamina Meat-Egg Don" and the "Mohe-Don," then couldn't resist adding housemade oden on top. The firm handmade udon and slowly simmered oden delivered a gentle, comforting flavor that melted away the fatigue of travel. A detoured plan that turned into an outright jackpot โ one of travel's great joys.

Awaji Highway Oasis โ Last Onion Fix Before Heading Home
Adjacent to the northbound SA on the way back to Honshu, "Awaji Highway Oasis" was our final detour. In the food court, a bold server dispenses onion soup straight from a tap โ one last reminder of just how deeply onion culture runs on Awaji Island. Right at the island's exit, this trip remained thoroughly steeped in onions until the very end.

Kobe Suma Sea World โ Meeting the Orcas: An Aquarium for a New Era
Reopened in 2024 under the nickname "KOBE SUMA," this aquarium greets visitors first with a massive orca sculpture at the entrance โ instant excitement. The large pool where you can observe orca whales up close is one of Japan's rarest experiences, absolutely breathtaking. The sheer scale of an orca drifting just beyond the glass is something no photograph can convey. A grand finale befitting the close of an Awaji Island journey.

Mid-March is peak rapeseed season on Awaji Island
The rapeseed at Hana-Sajiki hits full bloom, and the contrast against the blue sea is extraordinary. Mid-March to early April is especially recommended for a spring Awaji Island drive.
Awaji Chef Garden exceeded all expectations
Beyond being a lunch spot, it's a venue where pop-up stalls from popular restaurants can show up. Checking the latest vendor information before your visit gives you more flexibility in planning your day.
"Plan changes" make travel richer
Even when Shichi Cafe was fully booked, the impromptu detour to Moheiji turned into a deeply satisfying lunch. Travel is most rewarding precisely when plans go sideways and surprises emerge.
Go south early for the best of South Awaji's food scene
The meat onigiri at Michi-no-Eki Uzushio and the fresh vegetables at Minakoi Koiya sell out quickly. On Day 2, heading south first thing in the morning is the winning strategy.
Strongly recommend pre-purchasing tickets for Suma Sea World
This popular facility can have long queues for same-day tickets. Buying timed-entry tickets online in advance will get you in smoothly and save you from waiting in line.
